2006 Martínez Payva Tempranillo Ribera del Guadiana

From the winery: "This estate, scattered with Roman remains, is in Alange, just 18 km from Merida. A region of gently rolling clay
hills, warm climate and lingering light. Vineyards located at an average height of 520 m (1500+ ft), with a continental climate
influenced by the ocean breezes. This is the ALVEAR family's new venture and latest challenge in Extremadura. The venture combines the goal of making quality wines from exceptional soils with the experience handed down throughout generations at Alvear's wineries. Knowledge about ageing and making wines is being applied to a new
project based on quality, tradition and respect for the land. The knowledge passed down from generation to generation through the family is being used for this exceptional vineyard - Syrah reaches its potential in Extremadura (Ribera del Guadiana). The Senorio de Alange Syrah is an exquisite example of what is attainable from this grape if the process of winemaking is carefully controlled. Dark violet ruby colour. Bright and clean. Spicy balsamic aromas with plumy and earthy notes. Great flavour intensity, revolve around blackberries and black plums, freshly cracked black pepper. Nice tannins, good complexity, smooth and silky texture."

"Like someone speaking softly to get your undivided attention, Regaleali whispers delectable mineral, floral and citrus aromas to draw you into a glass of effusive apple, pear and lemon zest flavors cheered on by bright and lively acidity. The Tasca d'Almerita estate is in Sicily, the island perched at the toe of the Italian boot, where they grow the three indigenous grape varieties used in this wine. It was made to showcase the fruit, so enjoy it while it's young with a tuna salad."

Dyer Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Mountain 2004

Megclemans posted a review:

A new and little winery from the Diamond Mt. region. The Dyers' are both winemakers, Bill for Sterling Daimond Mt Cab, Dawnee for Chandon. Both with over 20 years of experience.

This is what a Cabernet Sauvignon should be. Full robust dark cherry, leather, dusty finish and understated oak. There is none of the California overripe and jammy fruit that so many have gone towards. It is lovely to finally have a California Cabernet Sauv that speaks to what they once were and a price that is shocking for the quality in the bottle. This is definetly a wine for those who lend toward an older style or remember when before so many started tasting and feeling the same.

This wine pairs well with ribeye and spagehettei and meatballs. It is also ageable for at least the next 8-10. Note that it needs to be decanted otherwise it takes two days for this wine to really shine.

Rating: 4.35 / 5.00

Tried it with some california roll brown rice sushi. Does not match.

I can see the grapes when I inhale this wine. They are plump, glistening, pale green...

The wine has a great breath and settles well on the palate. Smooth almost silky on the tongue.

I might have to give this another star.

De Martino Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

Aged in French oak barrels for 18 months, this concentrated Cabernet has ripe, smooth tannins that fill the mouth.

The De Martino family has been producing wine in Chile’s famous Maipo Valley for almost 70 years. The wines reflect the area’s terroir, resulting in big, rich, extracted flavor. Delicate use of oak adds complexity, but the strength of De Martino wines is in their fruit. These wines are concentrated and elegant, each with a distinctive personality.

"Spicy, fresh and quite vibrant," exclaims Decanter Magazine.

"Inky ruby. Primary, grapey aromas of blackberry and candied plum. Youthful and tightly wound, with pure, sweet cassis and dark cherry flavors nicely supported by solid tannic structure. This should be interesting in a year or so."
